Food Studies in a Nutshell...
Food Studies is still in its infancy, arising somewhat officially in the mid-1990's as a burgeoning field of study on college campuses across the US and Canada . Primarily, Food Studies is a discipline which explores the intersection of food with a dazzling array of other areas -- anthropology, archeology, art, biology, chemistry, economics, history, literature, nursing and nutrition, philosophy -- the list could go on exhaustively. Food Studies, therefore, is by its very nature an interdisciplinary course of study with wide-ranging applications, which makes it instrumental in helping liberal arts students realize and recognize the interconnectedness of college courses they may previously have perceived as being too disparate to share commonalities.
Although the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire does not have a Food Studies major per se, it is possible for students at our university to engage in a Food Studies program of their own making under the auspices of UWEC's new Liberal Studies Major, where they would encounter courses which focus on food in numerous departments across campus.
